Jason Haam is pleased to present Sun Rose, an exhibition of new paintings by Amanda Baldwin. On view from May 9 through June 30, 2026, the exhibition brings together a new body of work that marks a significant development in the artist’s evolving practice. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 9 5 from 7 PM.
Working across still life, landscape, and abstraction, Baldwin has developed a distinctive painterly language. Sun Rose foregrounds these recent developments in her exploration of space, color, and surface, bringing greater clarity to a style defined by condensed composition, vibrant uses of color, and a continued focus on the textures of the surface.
In her earlier works, Baldwin depicted everyday objects, such as fruits, plants, vessels, and decorative patterns, within a trompe-l’œil tradition, where objects appear to rest on the picture plane. These elements function not only as subjects, but also as structural devices that establish distance and tension within the composition. This interest gradually expanded into interior-like spatial arrangements, before developing into the landscape-based compositions that characterize her recent work.
While these phases may appear formally distinct, Baldwin’s practice maintains a consistent structural logic. The layering of forms to construct depth, the repetition and variation of motifs, and the treatment of surface remain continuous, evolving into increasingly refined and complex compositions.
Color and surface treatment are central to this development. Grainy textures, repeated patterns, and stratified paint layers have been present throughout her work, and in recent paintings, these elements are more tightly integrated with the structure of the landscape. Color operates not only as a descriptive tool, but also as a primary compositional force that generates rhythm and spatial depth, allowing the works to oscillate between landscape and abstraction.
In Sun Rose, these concerns unfold with greater intensity. A spiral structure emerges as a key compositional device, organizing the picture plane and guiding the overall formation of the image. Landscapes become more compressed and abstracted, taking on a geometric and distilled quality. Elements derived from natural sources—such as the sun, moon, plants, and mountains—are twisted and reconfigured into increasingly abstract forms. In this new body of work, Baldwin’s exploration of color and composition becomes more concentrated and assertive.
Sun Rose presents an opportunity to consider how Baldwin’s long-standing formal studies are consolidated and extended in her recent work, offering a more focused and layered understanding of her practice.
Amanda Baldwin was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1984, and studied painting at the University of Washington before receiving her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She currently lives and works in Queens, New York. She has held solo exhibitions in major cities worldwide, including London, Paris, and New York. Her works are held in the collections of prominent institutions such as the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), Long Museum, Start Museum, X Museum, Sixi Museum, and the Palm Springs Art Museum.
제이슨함 갤러리는 미국 출신 화가 아만다 볼드윈(Amanda Baldwin)의 개인전 ‘Sun Rose’를 선보입니다. Baldwin은 정물과 풍경, 추상의 경계를 오가며 독자적인 회화 언어를 발전시켜 온 작가로, 이번 전시는 최근 작업이 보여주는 새로운 전개를 집중적으로 소개합니다. 전시는 2026년 5월 9일부터 6월 30일까지 제이슨함 본관에서 진행되며, 5월 9일 오후 5시부터 7시에는 오프닝 리셉션이 예정되어 있습니다.
Baldwin 작업 전반의 주요한 특징은 깊이감 있는 화면 구성, 독자적인 색채, 반복적으로 변주되는 소재, 그리고 작품 표면에 대한 지속적인 탐구에 있습니다. 초기 작업에서 과일, 식물, 화병, 패턴 등 마치 물체들이 캔버스 위에 놓여 있는 듯한 트롱프뢰유 (trompe-l’œil)의 전통 안에서 등장하던 사물들은 단순한 소재를 넘어 화면 안에서 거리감과 긴장을 형성하는 요소로 기능해 왔습니다. 이러한 관심은 이후 인테리어를 연상시키는 공간적 장면들을 지나, 오늘날 Baldwin의 작업을 특징짓는 풍경 회화로 확장되며 보다 복합적인 화면 구성으로 발전하였습니다. 초기 작업과 최근 작업은 형식적으로 달라 보이지만, 사물을 층층이 배치하며 깊이를 만들어내는 방식, 반복되는 형태의 변주, 화면 표면을 다루는 감각은 일관되게 이어지며 더욱 세련되게 발전해 왔습니다.
특히 Baldwin의 작업은 색채와 표면을 다루는 방식에서 두드러진 특징을 보여줍니다. 입자감 있는 표면 처리, 반복되는 패턴, 층위감 있는 질감 표현은 초기 작업부터 최근 작업까지 꾸준히 나타나는 요소이며, 최근 작업에서는 이러한 특징이 풍경 구조와 더욱 긴밀하게 결합됩니다. 작가에게 색은 대상을 설명하는 수단에 머무르지 않고 화면의 리듬과 공간감을 만드는 중요한 조형 요소로 작동하며, 이러한 색채 탐구는 작품이 풍경인 동시에 추상적 성격을 갖도록 만듭니다.
이번 전시 ‘Sun Rose’에서 이러한 탐구는 새로운 단계로 전개됩니다. 최근 작업에서 두드러지는 나선형 구조는 단순한 모티프를 넘어 화면 전체의 구도를 이끄는 핵심 요소로 작동하며, 풍경은 이전보다 더욱 압축되고 추상화되며 기하학적으로 정제된 형태로 전개됩니다. 태양과 달, 식생, 지형에서 비롯된 요소들은 비틀리고 재구성되며 보다 추상적인 이미지로 전환되고, 특히 이번 신작에서는 색채와 구도에 대한 연구가 한층 두드러집니다. 이전 작업에서 축적되어 온 요소들이 응축되며, 최근 회화는 보다 농축되고 대담한 방향으로 확장되고 있습니다.
이번 전시는 Baldwin이 오랫동안 발전시켜 온 조형적 관심이 최근 작업에서 어떻게 새로운 밀도와 방향성을 획득하고 있는지를 보여주는 자리이자, 작가의 작업 세계를 보다 입체적으로 조망할 수 있는 기회가 될 것입니다.
Amanda Baldwin은 1984년 미국 시애틀에서 태어나 현재 뉴욕 Queens를 기반으로 활동하고 있습니다. University of Washington에서 회화를 전공하고 Virginia Commonwealth University에서 석사 학위를 취득하였으며, 런던, 파리, 뉴욕 등에서 개인전을 개최해 왔습니다. 작품은 서울시립미술관을 비롯해 Long Museum, Start Museum, X Museum, Sixi Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum 등 주요 기관에 소장되어 있습니다.
