Jason Haam is pleased to present Superbloom, a solo exhibition by Belgian artist Marie Cloquet. On view from May 9 through June 30, 2026, the exhibition brings together a new body of work that marks a more focused development in the artist’s practice. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 5 to 7 PM.
Cloquet’s work is based on the use of photographic images that are collected, edited, and recomposed into layered compositions. These images often originate from sites such as ruins, natural landscapes, and historically significant locations. Rather than documenting specific places, the works reorganize visual information to produce composite scenes that do not resolve into a fixed narrative.
The works do not aim to reconstruct a stable representation of a place, but instead register how visual experience is mediated and subject to variation. As a result, meaning is not presented as a singular outcome, but remains contingent on shifts in recognition and interpretation.
Earlier works primarily operated through the accumulation of photographic fragments. More recent works extend this approach through changes in material and scale. The use of aluminum panels has allowed for a more stable and continuous surface, while also enabling the work to expand into site-specific installations that engage with the space.
The Magnolia series, featured in this exhibition, begins with the artist’s observation that a photograph captured fewer magnolia blossoms than she recalled from the scene. This discrepancy between recorded image and remembered experience forms the basis of the series.
In these works, the magnolia functions as a repeatable visual element through which variation can be observed. The motif is repeated with controlled adjustments in color. Comprising fourteen paintings, the series adopts a constrained visual framework that limits the range of imagery and directs attention to variation within the image, particularly in color and surface. This approach makes perceptual differences more clearly identifiable without relying on complex image construction.
Superbloom presents a continuation of Cloquet’s investigation into the relationship between image and perception. The works on view extend this inquiry through a more concentrated use of repetition, variation, and material structure, while remaining open-ended in its interpretation.
Marie Cloquet (b. 1976, Belgium) lives and works in Ghent. She received her BFA from LUCA School of Arts and has presented solo exhibitions in Antwerp, Ghent, London, Madrid, and Paris. She was a finalist for the 2023 Arte Laguna Prize, and her work is held in collections including S.M.A.K., Stichting Liedts-Meesen, and M Leuven.

Cloquet 작업 전반의 주요한 특징은 사진과 회화가 중첩된 이미지 조합을 통해 인간의 기억과 의식을 탐구하는 데 있습니다. 작가는 그간 폐허, 자연적 지형, 역사적으로 의미 있는 장소 등 다양한 사진 이미지를 콜라주하여 새로운 풍경을 만들어 왔으며, 이러한 작업은 장소의 기억과 감각을 새롭게 조직하는 방식으로 전개되어 왔습니다. 즉각적인 서사나 재현보다 이미지가 불러오는 인식의 층위에 주목해왔다는 점에서, 기존 작업은 때로 거의 개념미술에 가까운 방식으로 읽히기도 합니다. 종이와 수채를 중심으로 출발한 작업은 최근 알루미늄 패널을 재료로 사용하는 방식으로 확장되어 왔으며, 이러한 변화를 통해 교회, 시청, 광장 등 장소를 점유하는 설치 작업으로까지 영역을 넓혀왔습니다.
‘Magnolia’ 연작은 실제 사진 속에 담긴 목련의 수가 기억 속 풍경보다 적게 촬영되어 있었던 작가의 경험에서 출발합니다. 작가에게 목련은 개인의 기억과 현실을 매개하는 장치이자, 시각적 경험의 주관성을 보여주는 소재입니다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 14점의 ‘Magnolia’ 작품은 기존 작업의 문제의식을 보다 직접적인 회화적 방식으로 풀어낸다는 점에서 주목됩니다. 작가가 이전에 직관적으로 해석하기 어려운 개념적 작품들을 통해 인식과 기억의 구조를 다뤄왔다면, 이번 전시작들은 목련이라는 뚜렷한 주제 아래 색채와 미세한 구도 변주를 통해 그러한 관심을 보다 직관적으로 드러냅니다. 목련 연작 역시 감각적 기억과 인식에 대한 개념적 문제의식에서 출발하지만, 보다 개방적이고 회화적인 방식으로 표현됩니다. 반복되는 형상 안에서 색과 구성의 변화를 탐구하는 이번 작업들은 작가가 다뤄온 문제의식을 보다 직접적으로 경험하게 합니다.
‘Superbloom’은 Marie Cloquet가 오랫동안 이어온 개념적 탐구가 보다 열린 회화적 언어로 확장되고 있음을 보여주는 전시입니다. 특히 이번 신작들은 작가가 대규모 설치와 복합적 이미지 구성에서 보여주었던 관심을 회화 안에서 풀어내며, 색과 반복, 변주를 통해 회화 자체의 가능성을 새롭게 탐구하고 있음을 보여줍니다.
Marie Cloquet는 1976년 벨기에에서 태어나 현재 헨트를 기반으로 활동하고 있습니다. LUCA School of Arts에서 학사 학위를 받았으며, 앤트워프, 헨트, 런던, 마드리드, 파리 등에서 개인전을 개최해왔습니다. 2023년 Arte Laguna Prize 최종 후보에 선정되었으며, 작품은 S.M.A.K., Stichting Liedts-Meesen, M Leuven 등에 소장되어 있습니다.
