Jason Haam is pleased to present Eastern Pastoral, the gallery’s first exhibition of 2026. Presented as part of the Jason Haam Secondary Program, the exhibition brings together major works by Kim Whanki, Lee Ufan, Kim Tschang-Yeul, Chung Sanghwa, Lee Bae, and Yayoi Kusama.

The exhibition examines how these artists developed distinct visual languages through sustained engagement with nature and process-based practices. Simple forms and controlled techniques shape abstract works that reflect core values in East Asian art and thought, including balance, patience, and attentiveness.

Each artist approaches these concerns through a focused and individual practice. Kim Whanki structures lyrical abstraction through ordered compositions, while Kim Tschang-Yeul repeatedly returns to the image of the water drop as a disciplined method of painting. Lee Ufan emphasizes the relationship between minimal gestures and surrounding space, and Lee Bae foregrounds material presence through his use of charcoal. Chung Sanghwa constructs monochrome grids through slow, methodical labor, while Yayoi Kusama’s repeated dots accumulate into expansive visual fields.

Together, the artists share a commitment to sustained, process-driven work and a restrained approach to form. Eastern Pastoral brings these practices into dialogue to present a visual language shaped by order, sensitivity, and long-term experimentation, inviting viewers to experience how disciplined making can produce quiet emotional and poetic depth.

제이슨함 갤러리는 2026년의 첫 전시로 Eastern Pastoral (동방목가)을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 김창열, 김환기, 이우환, 이배, 정상화와 같은 한국 현대미술 작가들과 일본의 쿠사마 야요이와 같은 동아시아의 현대미술 작품을 함께 조명한다.

제이슨함 세컨더리 프로그램의 연장선에 있는 Eastern Pastoral은 20세기 한국의 격동적인 시대 환경 속에서도 자연을 향한 지속적인 탐구와 수행적으로 반복하는 작업을 통해, 동방의 시각 언어를 구축해온 작가들의 회화 세계를 선보인다. 작가들은 동아시아의 목가적 정서를 바탕으로, 각기 다른 재료의 물성과 색감을 탐구하며 동양적인 시각적 이미지를 현대미술의 언어를 바탕으로 새롭게 해석해왔다.

한국적 정서와 자연을 현대적 조형미로 승화시킨 김환기, 물방울을 통해 수행의 과정을 보여주는 김창열, 점과 선의 조응을 탐구하는 이우환, 그리고 자연과 인간의 순환을 숯의 물성으로 표현한 이배, 그리고 단색의 격자 문양으로 명상적 감각을 일깨우는 정상화에 이르기까지, 작가들은 각자의 방식으로 해석한 ‘동방적 감각’을 작품을 통해 이야기한다. 여기에 반복되는 점을 통해 수행적 태도를 기반으로 작품활동을 지속해온 쿠사마 야요이의 작업이 더해져, 작품에서 나타나는 작가들의 점·선·면의 이미지는 개인의 작품적 표현을 넘어 동방의 보편적인 시각 언어에 대한 재해석으로 확장된다.

평생에 걸쳐 자신만의 시각 언어를 구축해온 작가들의 작업은 동아시아의 전통 문화에서 드러나는 목가적인 성격에 대한 재해석으로 볼 수 있다. Eastern Pastoral은 작가들이 이끌어온 동방 현대 회화의 흐름을 짚어보는 동시에, 그 속에 담긴 서정적인 요소들을 동시대적인 관점에서 다시 한번 마주하는 기회를 만든다.
