Jason Haam is pleased to present Idyll by the Tide, Mike Lee’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, following Homecoming in 2023. The exhibition presents a new body of paintings that marks a natural progression in Lee’s practice over the past several years. 

Lee’s earlier work was defined by a largely monochromatic palette, graphic elements, and highly controlled surfaces. Over time, his painting became increasingly autobiographical through his family history, cultural roots, and experience as an Asian American. Since 2023, Lee has increasingly incorporated AI into the construction of his images, while his compositions have grown more figurative, elaborate, and complex. More recently, color has entered his work, culminating in the looser, washed surfaces and expanded compositions presented in Idyll by the Tide. 

The new paintings depict families, companions, and solitary figures gathered along the shoreline. Successive washes of oil create establish soft expanses of sea, sand, and sky, while the figures retain the sculptural clarity characteristic of Lee’s earlier work. Traces of AI-generated imagery, including occasional anatomical irregularities, remain within the paintings, creating an unusual tension between technological construction and the increasingly expressive handling of paint.

The exhibition draws in part from Georges Seurat’s leisure scenes of the 1880s, particularly Bathers at Asnières and A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Like Seurat, Lee presents leisure as a moment of structured calm. Yet beneath these seemingly idyllic scenes lies a sense of uncertainty. Demographic contraction threatens the continuity of family life, while artificial intelligence increasingly challenges the place of human labor. Lee’s figures remain unconcerned with these larger forces, absorbed instead in the immediate pleasures of being together. 

Idyll by the Tide brings these developments together without representing a departure from Lee’s previous work. Rather, the exhibition makes visible a gradual transformation that has moved from monochromatic precision and autobiography toward color, landscape, greater pictorial complexity, and a broader consideration of family, society, and the future. 

Mike Lee currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea. He received his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, in 2006. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Seoul, and Nanjing, including exhibitions at Jason Haam, Half Gallery, and Sifang Art Museum. Lee has also participated in group exhibitions at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, the Honolulu Museum of Art in Honolulu, and the Vincent Price Art Museum in Los Angeles, among others.

제이슨함은 Mike Lee의 개인전 Idyll by the Tide를 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 2023년 Homecoming에 이은 작가의 두 번째 제이슨함 개인전으로, 수년간의 작업적 변화와 발전을 보여주는 신작 회화들을 선보입니다.

Mike Lee의 초기 작업은 흑백 색조와 그래픽적 요소, 절제된 화면을 특징으로 합니다. 이후 가족사와 문화적 뿌리, 아시아계 미국인으로서의 경험이 작업에 스며들며 점차 자전적인 성격을 띠기 시작했습니다. 2023년부터 Lee는 이미지와 구도를 만드는 과정에 AI를 적극적으로 활용하기 시작했고, 이에 따라 화면 속 인물과 배경도 더 구체적이고 복잡해졌습니다. 최근에는 여기에 색채가 더해졌으며, 전시 Idyll by the Tide에서는 보다 자유로운 제스처, 얇은 물감 층, 확장된 풍경과 구성을 적극적으로 드러냅니다. 

이번 신작은 해변에 모인 가족과 연인, 친구, 홀로 시간을 보내는 인물들을 그립니다. 여러 차례 얇게 올린 유화 물감층이 바다와 모래, 하늘의 부드러운 공간감을 만들어내는 한편, 인물들은 기존 작업 특유의 조각 같은 명료함을 유지합니다. 여기에 비정상적인 손가락 개수나 신체 덩어리 같은 AI 생성 이미지의 흔적을 의도적으로 화면에 남겨두며, 기술적 이미지와 자유로운 회화적 표현 사이의 독특한 긴장을 만들어냅니다.

이번 전시는 Georges Seurat가 1880년대에 그린 여가의 풍경, 특히 Bathers at Asnières와 A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte를 일부 참조합니다. Seurat의 그림처럼 Lee의 인물들은 평온한 여가의 순간에 머물러 있지만, 그 이면에 불확실한 미래가 자리합니다. 인구 감소로 가족과 세대의 연결은 점차 불안해지며, 인공지능의 발전은 인간의 노동 자체에 의문을 제기합니다. 그러나 화면 속 인물들은 이러한 변화를 등진 채 지금 이 순간, 함께하는 시간에 몰두합니다.

Idyll by the Tide는 오랜 시간 계속된 회화적 변화가 분명하게 드러나는 전시입니다. 흑백 화면과 자전적 이야기에서 출발한 작업은 색채와 풍경, 디테일한 화면을 통해 가족과 사회, 그리고 미래에 대한 질문으로 확장됩니다. 이렇게 축적된 변화의 흔적은 작가의 회화가 한 형식에 머무르지 않고 앞으로도 계속 변화하고 확장될 가능성을 보여줍니다.

Mike Lee는 현재 서울에서 거주하며 작업하고 있습니다. 2006년 로스앤젤레스의 Otis College of Art and Design에서 BFA를 취득했습니다. 뉴욕, 로스앤젤레스, 서울, 난징에서 개인전을 개최했으며, Jason Haam, Half Gallery, Sifang Art Museum 등에서 작품을 선보였습니다. 이외에도 로스앤젤레스의 Japanese American National Museum, 호놀룰루의 Honolulu Museum of Art, 로스앤젤레스의 Vincent Price Art Museum을 비롯한 여러 기관의 단체전에 참여했습니다.
